Hiyala’s massage is the best investment I have for my health and well-being.  And I recommend her highly. Tom
Hiyala uses the following techniques in her massages:
  • Swedish: (Usually light or medium intensity).  The most common type of massage, Swedish massage uses gentle, kneading movements to massage the body.
  • Ashiatsu: (Deep Pressure Massage). You will be laying on a comfortable mat on the floor, and the therapist will apply oil with her hands, and use her feet and body weight  to rub out the muscles.
  • Shiatsu: Clothes on massage that uses accupressure techniques applied with the hands, thumbs, elbows and knees.
  • Positional Therapy:  Very effective massage for getting rid of ‘trigger points,”  which are basically, “snags” in the thin layer of tissues that surround your muscles.  This technique is sometimes called “fold and hold” and is used by some chiropractors and physical therapists.  You will be “folded” into various positions that will release the muscles that are tight.  Each “fold’ is held for 90 seconds.  You will almost immediately feel the release of your long held pain.  A clothes on massage.  A good massage to choose when you have limited time or budget because it is quick and “to the point”.  You can schedule a 15 minute spot massage and be back to work within an half hour!
  • Headache Relief: Hiyala offers a very effective treatment that will get rid of your headache.  It takes about 15 minutes of your time.  It comes from a technique called Korean Hand Therapy.  You don’t have to live with pain. Call Hiyala if you have a headache.
  • Rocking: This  soothing and nuturing technique is helpful in a massage. As you begin to “settle in” to your body, your body is rocked gently from side-to-side as the spine is massaged. As with any technique, nothing has to be “tolerated.” Each massage is customized to your needs.  Not everybody likes the same things. Be the master of your massage.  Share feedback to be sure your massage is just what you want!
Hiyala’s Training:
Hiyala received most of her training from 1992-1993 at Harbin Hot Springs studying Integrative Yoga and Deep Tissue with Diana Lonsdale and Shiatsu with Harold Dull, the creator of “Watsu,” a floating style of Shiatsu done in a warm pool. She worked at  Calistoga Village Inn and Spa and at Wilbur hot Springs before returning to Minnesota. Since then she has studied Positional Release Therapy at Kripalu Institute as well as various other trainings at Northwestern and Centerpoint in the Twin Cities. She loves to learn about the amazing body and seeks out training and education opportunities whenever she can.
